Patient Information – After Surgery

You will be moved to a fully-equipped recovery room where the anesthesiologist and recovery room nurses will observe you until you are ready to go home. Your doctor will want to talk to a family member/friend after your surgery so it is important for this person to be available.

Recovery time varies per patient; typically, most patients are discharged within 1-2 hours after the procedure.

You will be provided with post-operative instructions about diet, rest, restrictions, exercise and medications. These instructions will be given to you both verbally and in written form to ensure that any and all questions you have are answered prior to your discharge.

If you had anesthesia and/or pain medications, arrange for an adult to remain with you at home for at least 24 hours. We also recommend that you postpone the following during the 24 hours after discharge:

– Driving and operating equipment

– Signing important papers

– Drinking alcoholic beverages

– Making significant decisions

If you have any unexpected problems, please contact your doctor. A nurse from the center will attempt to call you the next day to check on your progress and discuss any questions you may have.
